The Third Shot
The third shot is a critical transition move that uses a soft, lofted arc to neutralize opponents and allow the serving team to safely advance from the baseline to the net.
Groundstrokes
Groundstrokes are shots played after the ball bounces, helping players stay balanced and control the pace of rallies. Learning them gives beginners a steady base for moving the ball with purpose and setting up the next shot.
Volleys
Volleys are shots hit before the ball bounces, usually played near the net to keep control of the rally. Practicing them helps beginners react quickly, stay steady, and put gentle pressure on their opponents.
Lobs
Lobs are high, arching shots sent over opponents to push them back toward the baseline. They give players time to reset their position, recover during a rally, or set up a stronger shot on the next swing.
Overhead Smash
The overhead smash is a strong, downward shot played on a high ball, often used to finish a rally. Good timing and balance help beginners hit it with control instead of swinging too hard and losing accuracy.
Scoring and Position
Understanding scoring and court positioning helps players know where to stand and when points are won. Learning how the two connect gives beginners more control during rallies and helps a team move together.
Serving
Serving starts every rally and sets the pace of the game, so a steady, consistent serve gives players an early advantage. Beginners benefit from a smooth, controlled motion that keeps the ball deep and in play.
Return of Serve
A good return of serve can break up the opponent’s plan and put you in control early in the rally. Returning with depth and control helps beginners stay balanced and get ready for a strong follow-up shot.
Dinks
Dinks are soft, controlled shots that drop just over the net into the opponent's non-volley zone. Because they are tough to attack, they let beginners slow the rally down and wait for a better chance to score.
Judging Ball In or Out
Judging whether a ball lands in or out helps players make fair calls and handle close shots with confidence. Watching the lines carefully lets beginners avoid mistakes and respond to an opponent's faults.
