Strengthen Your Game with Effective Returns

Use return placement and depth to limit the server’s advantage and prepare for the next shot.

The return of serve is the receiving team’s first chance to take control of the rally. A steady return gives the receiver time to move forward and helps keep the serving team back near the baseline.

Beginners should focus on depth and control. A deep return makes it harder for the server to attack quickly and gives the receiving team more time to reach the non-volley zone before the next shot. That extra time helps players get set, stay balanced, and avoid a rushed follow-up.

A good return starts with early preparation. Players should watch the serve, move into position, and use a smooth swing instead of rushing. Clean contact and balanced footwork help send the ball back with better placement.

The return does not need to be a winner. Its main job is to land safely, push the serving team back, and set up stronger court position. Consistent returns create pressure because they force the server to hit the next ball from deeper in the court.

With practice, the return of serve becomes a reliable part of rally control. It helps beginners stay calm after the serve, recover into position, and prepare for the next shot with more confidence and better balance.
